Wellacre Plays Winning Match at Salford Red Devils

Wellacre’s Year 7 rugby team triumphed under the lights at the Salford Red Devils Stadium on Friday 18th March.  The team earned the incredible opportunity to play in the half-time break of the Salford Reds and Leeds Rhinos!

This season, they have competed and won in three tournaments coordinated by the Salfords Red Foundation, against schools from Salford, Trafford, Bolton and Stockport.

Their winning streak culminated in the invitation to play the most recent festival final versus St. Joseph’s, Horwich, at the AJ Bell Stadium.  The team were victorious with the winning try from Dylan!

Mr Whitehead, Teacher of PE, said:

“We are super proud of the Year 7 rugby team and their top class performance in the AJ Bell Stadium. It was such an exciting opportunity.  The boys absolutely loved the atmosphere of the AJ Bell Stadium and playing to a packed out crowd - the cheer from Leeds Rhinos fans for Dylan’s winning try was fantastic!”

A huge well done to our Year 7 team - Ryan, Dylan, Zack, Oscar, Amari, Tom, Sam, Harry G, Harry M, Oliver C, Joshua, Luca, Oliver S and Will.  Special thanks to Will, who was unable to play due to injury but attended in full kit to support his teammates.

Building the Future invited the next generation of Salford fans to watch the matches and there were 2300 children from schools and community clubs in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Bristol, in attendance.

Rugby is a thriving sport at Wellacre with many students seizing the opportunity to play for the school teams, after school clubs and community squads.  If any students would like to get involved, please see the PE Department for more information.
