Student leadership is important at Wellacre and provides a real opportunity for students to promote student voice, to make a difference, to learn and grow in their role, and ultimately, to make a positive contribution to their school.

The conference began with a keynote from Principal, Mrs Sharrock, about the importance of a leadership role, the challenges and the shared vision for Wellacre.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, said:

“I am really looking forward to working with the Student Leaders this year. They are going to make a really good team.”

Students then participated in a series of icebreaker and team-building activities to help House teams get to know one another.  A group discussion also took place in which students analysed the qualities of good leaders.

Year 9 Zack, Pankhurst’s Vice Captain, said:

“I learned a lot and I feel like I know how to approach my role as a Student Leader.  My leadership skills have improved and the team-building activities helped us to get to know our House teams.”

House teams were then tasked to use the knowledge and skills learned to plan a 20-minute training session, to include an ice breaker, sharing of the house leadership vision and a team building activity promoting the skills of leadership. They will deliver this training session to all the House Form Representatives at their next House/Year 11 meeting.

Zack added:

“We organised training for our Form Representatives and I learned to show them how important they are and what they should bring to their role.”

Mrs O’Neill, Assistant Principal for Personal Development, said:

“Students worked really hard at our Conference and came up with some fantastic and considered ideas and responses. I was really proud of them. I look forward to meeting them at our first Executive Council on 17th October.”
