Holocaust Memorial Day 2017

WELLACRE helped to support Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 by making time for our students to remember the people who were killed, affected and changed forever by the Holocaust.

As part of our daily DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) / Form Time, students quietly reflected upon or led discussions about the topics of discrimination, racism and bullying. Form Tutors, supported by our Humanities Department, helped to link their thoughts to the events and aftermath of persecution during World War 2, allowing our students to consider what life as child would be like amid this terrible period of modern history.

We have used Holocaust Memorial Day as a way for our students to see through the eyes of others, to witness for themselves, the consequences of unchallenged persecution and prejudice.

Ms. G. Perry, Teacher of Humanities and a selection of Year 10 Students also attended a powerful afternoon service at the Waterside Arts Centre, Sale. Listening and watching intently to a wonderful mix of spoken word and drama, experiencing ‘Lighting The Three Candles Of Remembrance’ and ‘Prayer for the Dead’ before the Springfield Primary School Choir concluded the day with a final, beautiful rendition of ‘The Song I Keep in My Heart’.

Drawing inspiration from the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust who encourage us all to "work together to create a safer, better future" WELLACRE will continue to build supportive and respectful learning communities throughout our school and within our local area.
