Wellacre Attends Trafford Youth Cabinet Event

On Thursday 11th November, Wellacre students were invited to attend the Trafford Youth Conference, delivered by the Trafford Youth Cabinet and the TSSP (Trafford Strategic Safeguarding Partnership), at Sale Life Centre. Wellacre’s House and Vice Captains represented the school on the day.

Students from across Trafford gathered for a series of workshops on the theme of sexism, following the recent report into sexual harassment in schools, although many more topics were discussed.  Students learnt about the 'Our Streets Now' campaign to end public sexual harassment, students were encouraged and stand up and take action against this issue.  Workshops ranged from free university education,  sexism in school, domestic abuse and timeless (green) wardrobes!

Representatives from the TSSP attended the conference to speak to students and ask them what they thought the safeguarding priorities should be in Trafford.

Year 8 Wellacre student, Billy, bravely took to the stage to present to the conference audience.  He spoke about Wellacre students’ belief that raising awareness of the importance of Mental Health and Wellbeing should be a priority in schools.

All student teams worked together to create their own political party and highlight their key priorities.  Wellacre devised the INTOTO party, which stands for In Total, and is a party that aims to represent all equally.

Mrs Irwin, Head of House, said:

“Wellacre’s team of students spoke eloquently about the concerns they have about being a young person in Trafford and how they hope things can change in the future.  I was so impressed with their confidence and hope they continue to stand up and be heard in the future."

“Billy was the star of the day; he was the only student on the day to present to the whole conference and he asked lots of excellent questions!”

Well done to our House and Vice Captains for Lowry, Turing and Pankhurst: Matthew, Sam, Roshan,  George, Harrison, Evan, William and Billy.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, commented:

“Thank you to Mrs Irwin for accompanying  the students to such an important event. For students to have a forum to express their views, and shape policies around the provisions for young people in Trafford, is what genuine ‘student voice’ should be about. We are all very proud of them,  especially Billy.”
