Investment in Young Leaders at Wellacre

Wellacre hosted a Student Leadership Conference for our recently appointed Senior Prefect team and House teams.

Mrs O’Neill and Mr Pemberton gathered our young leaders together for a conference aimed at developing their leadership capacity and their confidence, so that they can influence their peers at school in a positive way.

The conference sessions included the importance of their roles, effective student leader characteristics, guidance on how to lead their teams at school, and reviewing the shared vision for Wellacre.

Students reflected on leadership through discussion and several activities, which put into practice all the leadership, teamwork and communication skills they had learned.

One particular activity was the ‘ball in the bucket’ game, where groups worked in a team, using effective communication to coach a team member to throw a ball into a bucket, which was placed out of sight behind them!

The group also looked at upcoming responsibilities including participation at Wellacre events, including Open Evening and Primary Day, Executive Council and House Council meetings, and the promotion and encouragement in the Form Representatives elections.

Mr Pemberton, Vice Principal, said:

“The conference was an excellent opportunity to inspire our student leaders; we looked at how leaders come from very different backgrounds but all have a shared purpose and heard from students which leaders inspire them - they talked about a number of people from Lincoln to Gareth Southgate!

“At Open Evening and Primary Day, these students were exemplary ambassadors for Wellacre and spoke passionately about our school.  They will now be encouraging their peers to get involved in a leadership position and opportunities across school, for example  through the Form Representative elections.”

Each student reflected on lessons learnt on the day and made a Student Leadership pledge.

“I promise as a leader to listen to everyone’s ideas and thoughts, and I promise to work my hardest.”

“We learnt that Student Leadership is not done by just one person but by a team working together.”
