Year 9 Student Wins Climbing Competition

In March, Theo represented Wellacre at a Greater Manchester Schools competition at Rock Over Climbing, for children in all key stages.

Theo, Year 9, won the event by completing a series of climbing challenges and achieving the highest score! The challenges include lead climbing, where climbers make an ascent using ropes to secure their course, and bouldering, which is a free climbing style performed low to the ground.

Explaining the difference between the two types of climb, Theo said:

“Lead climbing is roped and involves height, whereas with bouldering you don’t feel the height as you are lower to the ground but it’s much more technical.”

All competitors are asked to complete as many of the problematic and difficult routes as possible and Theo topped the competition by completing them all in his first attempt.

Theo climbs three times a week and has been competing now for two years.

Theo said:

“I like climbing because I’m good at it and I feel like I’m improving all the time. When I go climbing after school, I feel like I can relax on the wall.”

Theo travels around the UK for competitions and the next event will see Theo travel to Scotland - good luck Theo!
