National Space Academy Visits Wellacre

Year 11 GCSE Physics students welcomed the National Space Academy on the 12th September for a Masterclass on Space entitled ‘Looking Out, Looking Back.”

The National Space Academy opens the door into the space sector and brings the context of space to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

During the workshop there was great engagement and discussion on the topics and the National Space Academy course leader used the inspirational context of space during the hands-on, practical activities.

In groups, students were tasked with building telescopes to look at an infrared camera, and studied ocean currents through thermochromic modelling.

Students also discussed careers and opportunities relating to the Space sector, and in learning about Space engineering discovered that there are 10,000 new jobs projected in the UK alone in the next five years.

Mr Toogood, Leader of Science, said:

“The National Space Academy Masterclass helped our Year 11 students to revise their studies of Space and to look at possible careers in this exciting field, in which the UK are world leaders.”

One Year 11 student added:

“I liked making the telescopes best - this was fun and hands on, and really helped my understanding.”
