Aspiring professional footballer, Year 11 Matthew, set his sights on a Stoke City FC Academy scholarship last year.

Despite serious injury on the pitch, Matthew has recently enjoyed great success by securing a two-year scholarship with the Championship League team.

Matthew said:

“I came back after 8 months off with injury, played with the under 18s team and they made the decision about my scholarship early. In March, my Manager and Academy Director arranged for my family to surprise me at training and tell me the news!”

Currently training and playing for the under 16 team, Matthew attends the club regularly and in June will make the big step of moving into the academy residence following his GCSE assessments.

He adds:

“It will be really different living away from home but it will be a great experience.   My dream is to play at the highest level I possibly can and really enjoy it.”

Matthew will spend two years on-site and as well as honing his football skills, he will also further his education.

Principal Mrs Sharrock said:

“We’re extremely proud of Matthew and all he has achieved so far in his football career.  He has proven himself to be a focused and motivated young man, who works hard at his school whilst also progressing his football career. We wish Matthew every success with Stoke City FC and hope that he will keep us informed about his progress.”
