Bronze Medal for Wellacre Swim Star

We are proud to share news of Year 7 student, Lewis, and his success in competitive swimming including winning a Bronze medal in the recent Lancashire County Championship.

Throughout 2019, Lewis has been training hard with the Flixton Swim Club to achieve qualifying times for the County Championships.

Lancashire has some of the toughest qualifying times to achieve in the country and despite Lewis, age 11, competing against others in his category aged 13, he succeeded in achieving 12 qualifying times!

The events took place in January and February 2020 and Lewis entered 9 races including 50m and 100m front crawl, 50m and 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 50m and 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle, and 200m IM (50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50 front crawl.)

As well as swimming and achieving personal best times in each event he entered, Lewis reached the finals of five out of a possible six events (only 50m and 100m events have finals) and went on to secure a Bronze medal in the 100m backstroke.

Lewis said:

“I did not expect to win a medal as I was swimming against 13 year olds and backstroke is not my strongest event; so I was really happy to get a Bronze!”

Lewis has been swimming since he was 7, beginning with Swim Well before joining Flixton Swim Club.  He is highly committed and trains five times a week, including twice on a Saturday.

He has experienced swimming competitively, and success, at both regional and county championships; in 2018, he won Bronze medal at County Championships for 100m freestyle and in 2019, he won Silver for 50m freestyle.

Lewis now has qualifying times for eight events at the North West Regional Championships in May held in Manchester and Liverpool, and we wish him all the best!
