Improvement Projects at Wellacre

It has been just over 12 months since Mrs Julie Sharrock joined Wellacre as Principal. And whilst the pandemic has presented huge challenges across the whole of the education world, she has ensured the work to improve and invest in Wellacre has continued. This has included over a quarter of a million pounds of investment in capital, ICT and facilities projects.

The focus has been on developments which will ensure a thriving school environment at Wellacre, and have included substantial capital projects such as new roofing on a large area of the school building, subsidised by a Department for Education grant, and new skylights and gym floors.

To create inspiring spaces, money has been dedicated to updating classrooms with new sets of furniture and branded, consistent displays across the school.

Wellacre’s ICT infrastructure will also see a significant investment in a comprehensive four year development strategy.

The library has seen a significant investment and focus on new books and furniture to inspire a love of reading.  Students have been heavily involved in driving developments, not only through new book and topic suggestions but also in supporting Wellacre’s sponsored readathons. With parental and school community support, £1000 was raised over two events in 2021/22 and a ‘New Chapter’ book wishlist invited parental contributions, which boosted new book purchases further.

Moving outside, the school’s on-site Eco Centre has seen a range of exciting developments undertaken.  Student involvement has been encouraged through several Co-Curricular groups - Eco, Foraging and Grow Your Own Clubs.  New and existing areas cleared for seasonal planting, with path and access repairs, biodomes cleaned and picnic benches procured and installed for staff wellbeing, as well as outdoor learning for students.

This academic year, Wellacre ensured students can proudly represent their school at events and trips in our new mini-bus, funded by school alongside significant parental contributions.

Our goal is to encourage and enable students to be more environmentally conscious and independent, therefore we will soon be installing a new bike shed funded by Wellacre’s School Lottery (with £2,800 raised by parents and carers over 13 months) and a Transport for Greater Manchester grant.

As Wellacre continues to enhance our provision to support wellbeing, we officially opened our Reflection Room in May.  The space is for both staff and students to use for prayer, reflection, mindfulness or just to take some quiet time for wellbeing.

Principal Mrs Sharrock says:

“We are proud of all the hard work undertaken to maintain a thriving school environment which is safe, welcoming and inclusive.  We will continue to keep parents and carers updated on the progress of all these exciting developments and the positive impact they have on their son’s education and experience at Wellacre.”
