Students join the YST Active Health Programme

Wellacre’s Year 9 Sport Leaders joined Commonwealth Judo champion Sophie Cox at a Youth Sport Trust ‘Active in Health’ programme.Sophie Cox 1 crop.png

Sophie spent the morning mentoring a group of students from local schools including Wellacre, Flixton Girls, Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College and Wellington High School.

Students discussed the importance of health and wellbeing, and also benefits and barriers to physical activity alongside how to encourage participation in sport.  The training will all inspire their next steps in the Active Health programme.

The Sports Leaders have been tasked to develop and implement a sustainable project in raising the physical activity levels of our Key Stage 3 students outside of the PE curriculum, during lunchtimes and after school.

Year 9 student George said:

“This is such a good opportunity for us to inspire other students to become active and introduce students to new and exciting physical activities. I want our students to lead an active and healthy lifestyle that will stay with them for life.”

The Active in Health programme is a Youth Sport Trust national initiative, which aims to raise student participation in physical activity.

Following the session with students Sophie Cox said on twitter:

“Great input from the students and teachers working together on the Active in Health programme @YouthSportTrust #overcomingbarriers #youngleaders.”
