On 27th June, Wellacre’s Creative Arts Department welcomed Cyril Flint Befrienders for an afternoon devised by students in our co-curricular P6 programme.

Drama students performed a theatrical piece called ‘Reflections’ about loneliness and companionship.  This was followed by an entertaining music show including a samba drum performance.

Some of the moving musical pieces had been inspired by the topic of loneliness, including Nicky (Year 10) on piano, Louis (Yr 9) on flute, and Louis (Year 8) on trombone.

Those in Art gifted specially designed Mindfulness booklets to visitors full of puzzles and colouring.  Students spent time with community members working through the booklet and getting to know each other.  Everyone enjoyed refreshments and cakes, including fresh cream and jam scones, made by Year 10 Food and Nutrition students, and spent a wonderful afternoon together.

Mrs Tickle, Teacher of Performing Arts, said:

“It was lovely to see  our students perform again and for such a wonderful audience.  It was a great opportunity for our students to discuss and reflect on loneliness, especially those who had actually experienced it during covid, and for this to inspire their performances.”

Antonia, from Cyril Flint, added:

“The boys at Wellacre put on a fantastic performance for our befriendees at Cyril Flint, to express the effects of isolation from the pandemic. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with musical performances, acting entertainment, and activity packs, as well as freshly made scones from the students in Food Tech!

Such a joy for us to be a part of, we would all love to come again. Congratulations to all the students that participated for their fantastic efforts. We cannot thank you enough for a lovely afternoon.”

The charity, Cyril Flint Befrienders, works in Trafford to secure regular visits for elderly people in their home, who do not have frequent visitors.

Mrs Sharrock, Principal, said:

“It was a lovely afternoon of excellent performances and the students provided wonderful food and companionship for our visitors.  Well done to everyone involved.”
