Work Experience for Lewis and Callum

Former students, Lewis and Callum, returned to Wellacre to undertake a work experience placement in the PE Department.

Both students, who left in 2019, are currently studying a L2 NVQ Sport Coaching course at Eccles College with aspirations to coach football professionally.

The course includes learning about a range of different sports, and coaching practices unique to each sport.  Students also learn about motivating and inspiring others to participate in sporting activities.

Lewis, said:

“I’m enjoying attending college and the Sport Coaching course, which is very practical alongside the assignments we have to complete.

Callum adds:

“Our course has given us an insight into what it takes to become a coach and planning valuable and engaging activities.”

As part of completing their first year and moving on to the L3 course, students must organise a two week placement to obtain first-hand knowledge and understanding of a teaching environment, as well as teaching practices.

Wellacre’s PE Department has welcomed Lewis and Callum into lessons to shadow Teachers of PE, before assisting in Year 7 to 11 lessons.  The pair also were given time to plan and deliver their own lessons together and independently.

Lewis, said:

“It’s been different being back in school as a teacher!  Students have listened to us well in lessons and enjoyed the activities with us, such as circuits and kicker (form of cricket).”

Callum added:

“I’ve enjoyed working alongside staff and teaching the students, rather than being one!  Students have been really interested in what I’ve been doing since I left and have been asking lots of questions about my college course.”

Lewis and Callum have impressed the PE staff with their commitment to the work placement and making it a valuable experience for their college course and ongoing training:

Teacher of PE, Mr Whitehead, said:

“We were glad to welcome Callum and Lewis back for a work experience placement; they have done really well to engage students and deliver fantastic sport lessons. They have taken full responsibility for lessons by planning, preparing and delivering the activities and it has given them a real insight and opportunity to learn within the school environment.”
