Wellacre Joins Cyber Discovery Programme

Wellacre students are celebrating success as part of the Cyber Discovery programme.   Cyber Discovery is the HM Government’s free, online extra-curricular programme turning teenagers, aged 13-18, across the country into cyber security experts.

A lunch-time Cyber Club was launched in September to provide an opportunity for problem solvers, code crackers and those that never give up!

The Cyber Discovery programme offers four stages, which increase in difficulty and a group of students have been informed that they have successfully completed phase one and have now moved on to tackle the next phase.

Well done to Thomas, Leo, Sean, Shivam, Chris, Jack, Shophiyan in Year 11.

Throughout the challenge, students take on the role of a security agent to crack codes and stop cyber criminals in their tracks, which encourages them to grow their computing skills and develop their natural creativity, problem-solving abilities and curiosity.

Mrs Lunn, Leader of Computing said:

“Watching the students approach each problem differently showing varying levels of proficiency has been intriguing. The students love of Computer Science and engagement in their studies has flourished even further, and there have been lots of discussions about higher education opportunities”.

“Each of the students have shown great resilience and subject knowledge and have progressed successfully, independent of my support.  I look forward to seeing who advances through to the next phase of the programme.”

Alongside the other programme stages, students can also battle against their peers in ‘Capture the Flag’ competitions in CyberStart Compete and three Wellacre students have been selected from 35,000 school children to take part in this additional challenge.

Year 11 Leo said:

“The programme has challenged how I think and approach a problem.  The rewards of completing each of the online challenges have reinforced my love of the subject and my choice to study computer science at A level.”

Fellow Year 11, Thomas, added:

“I found the challenges engaging because you have to work them out yourself from the resources given, without support. This programme reinforced the fact that I really like problem solving; Computer Science is based on this and it has reinforced my choice of further studies.”
