Professor David Olusoga OBE Lecture

On 6th November, Year 8 and 10 students were invited to attend a live-streamed lecture by award-winning British historian, writer, broadcaster, presenter and filmmaker Professor David Olusoga OBE.

Professor David Olusoga is the University of Manchester’s Professor of Public History, and the lecture was in honour of Black History Month.  He explored what it means to be Black and British, and the role of Black History.

Mr Harris, Leader of History and RE, said:

“The lecture supported students' understanding of historical concepts, such as empire and slavery, and enhanced their experience of historical interpretations, debate and scholarship.”

Year 8 student, Brady, said:

"The lecture really helped me with my British Empire interpretation assessment, especially as it was the same historian!"

Throughout October, Wellacre reflected on this year’s Black History Month theme; ‘Saluting Our Sisters’. This included Mrs O’Neill’s assembly for Year 11 and shared resources for all students in Tutor Time which focussed on the women who pioneered the Manchester Caribbean Carnival.

Students really enjoy this as their local history study at KS3; the project evolved from work in partnership with Historic England Heritage Schools. More information can be found here.
