Community Art Project Lands at Wellacre

There’s a buzz about Wellacre as Year 9 students start work on a giant honey bee sculpture as part of a Manchester art project.

Wellacre’s design will be just one of over 100 giant honey bee sculptures winging their way to Manchester in summer 2018, when the city holds one of its biggest ever public art events.

Miss Wicks, Principal, said:

“As with all the projects our students are involved with, they have thrown themselves into this task with great enthusiasm and created a design which will represent our school’s culture and ethos perfectly.  This is a fantastic opportunity for Wellacre to make a unique contribution to this trail.”

Working hard on the project, alongside Miss de Costa, Teacher of Art and Photography, are Alex, Oliver, Gerard, Louis, Harrison, Josh, Sean and Morgan.

The Bee in the City sculpture trail, organised by Manchester City Council and Wild in Art, is inspired by Manchester’s celebrated worker bee emblem which has been part of the city’s heraldry for over 150 years.

The trail will be on display throughout the city for nine weeks from July to September 2018 for Mancunians and visitors to enjoy whilst taking in the city’s landmarks, cultural gems and areas they may not have explored before.

There will be a Bee in the City app which visitors can download to 'check in' with each bee and track all those they see to try and complete the trail!
