Supporting Performing Arts at Wellacre

We were delighted to welcome the Fuel Theatre Company to Wellacre to treat our Year 9 students to a piece of live theatre!

The whole year group gathered to watch the ‘one man show’ about a young man’s journey through from his childhood in Nigeria to adjusting to life in the UK.

Themes such as Migration, Love, Growing up, Identity, Equality and Acceptance were explored through the performance; many of those which are also covered in Wellacre’s RESPECT curriculum.

Fuel’s actor, Zach, then delivered a drama workshop for 26 Year 9 students and they began with a question and answer session. The students took full advantage of the opportunity to explore Zach's career journey and experience, asking questions about Zach’s training, his passion for acting, his favourite genre and his claim to fame - which was meeting Idris Elba!

During the workshop, groups worked together to write interesting facts about themselves, their childhoods and heritage.  They then used these, and themes covered in the performance earlier in the day, as inspiration to write a short script for movement-based, dramatic pieces.

Mrs Tickle, Teacher of Performing Arts, said:

“Year 9 students enjoyed the opportunity to experience a piece of live theatre.  A performance of this kind was inspiring and supports the development of student knowledge and understanding of the Performing Arts here at Wellacre.”

Cale, Year 9, added:

“I really enjoyed the performance.  The ending with the character’s Dad in hospital brought a real-life sad situation to the forefront of the performance, making it emotional to watch.”
